A large manufacturing client needed our assistance updating their health and safety management system, which had been inactive for several years.
We started by carrying out a full initial health and safety audit at the premises to assess the level of support required and identify the gaps in their management system. This resulted in the production of a prioritised audit report and action plan that was discussed at a follow-up meeting. We went through the findings to identify, prioritise, and plan the best way to correct the issues discussed.
Over the following months, it was decided to undertake weekly visits to the Site to initiate the control measures that needed implementation. Overtime we implemented the following:
- Reviewed all processes on site and compiled a full set of generic risk assessments for all operations.
- Produced specific risk assessments for their work equipment on site. Produced specific risk assessments for any other tasks or processes carried out on site that may not be covered in points 1 and 2.
- Produced safe systems of work as required for operations with residual risk.
- Produced COSHH assessments for all Substances Hazardous to Health used on site.
- Produced specific detailed inspection forms as required for work areas, individual equipment items and any other inspections as required.
- Created a monthly health and safety Committee meeting. where competent advice was provided with reasonably practical suggestions for any issues health and safety issues raised.
Over time, the Client became more independent and took control of the entire H&S Management system. Whilst we still work with the client, it is more advisory than a “hands-on “ approach as they now understand their roles and responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
